Ollesmere

Ollesmere (/ollesmere/ [Translation Unavailable]) is a subtropical Small Town located in Lewgfazånewab Hold, Qiban Kingdom, within the Sylvanian Empire.

The name Ollesmere is derived from the Sylvin language, as Ollesmere was founded by Szelzus Upshaw, who was culturaly Sylvin.

Climate

Ollesmere has a yearly average temperature of 18°C (64°F), with its average temperature during the summer being a warm 27°C (80°F) and its average temperature during the winter being a cold 10°C (50°F). Ollesmere receives an average of 140 cm/y (55 in/y) of precipitation, most of which comes in the form of rain during the spring. Ollesmere covers an area of nearly 3 km² (1 mi²), and an average elevation of 3140 m (10301 ft) above sea level.

Overview

Ollesmere was founded durring the late 18th century in early spring of the year 1751, by Szelzus Upshaw. The establishment of Ollesmere was only bairly constructed. The sheer number of problems with its founding were enough to make several of the backers funding Ollesmere's construction back out of the project. Szelzus Upshaw pushed on reguardles, and Ollesmere was finished, but starts off as a terible place to live.

Ollesmere was built using the conventions of Sylvin durring the late 18th century. Naturaly, all settlmentss have their own look to them, and Ollesmere is no diffrent. The town's buildings feature masoned stone construction which prominantly features pointed arches, pointed ribbed vault cielings, flying buttress', and window tracery all of which share a simmilar gemoetetic patern halfway between organic and inorganic in design formaing a very distinct aesthetically integrated style. BUildings tend to reach for the havens, and more expencive homes are easily identified by their floor count as well as the addition of decorative features intigrated into the building's design such as statues, gargoyals, and embelished joinery.

Ollesmere is buildings are built arround a single narrow split-log ties mainstreet which forms a counterclockwise spiral to give the town a over all circular shape. The town is protected by a humble stone fence which is tall enough to provide adiquite cover for defenders to fire from, but no more than that. The town's peasent-grade have recently undergone extensive repairs and renovations, such that the repairwork is imeadiently apparent and can be spotted due to the diffring ages of materials. One can't help but wonder what brought the need for those repairs to the town.

Before you’ve even set foot into the heart of Ollesmere, you can smell it. The incense. It hangs about the town like a cloud. Monks, priests, and clerics are everywhere, all dedicated to the same divine, all performing the same rituals to bless and anoint buildings, streets, people, animals, you name it they are or have blessed it. The same holy symbol is everywhere too. Its on buildings, on people, and even branded into livestock. This certainly loves its divine. Asside form the revrent worship, you can see the citizens are preparing for something, and that something isn’t good. Weapons are worn openly. Defensive structures have been recently constructed to guard less used areas of the town. Merchants seem very eager to sell their wares at discount prices. Something is coming.

Civic Infrastructure

Ollesmere has an Office of Civil Vicary, which is responsible for providing a livelyhood for all officialy recognised religious figures within Ollesmere.

Ollesmere has a Gravedigger's Guild, which is responsible for collecting the dead and laying them to rest according to all applicable laws and religious customs.

Ollesmere has a monistary of an order of Civil Monks, who provide divine-related services to the general public and maintain Ollesmere's public wards, blessings, and other arcane systems.

Ollesmere possesses an older civil lighting system consisting of street lamps. These lights provide nighttime illumination to most city streets.

Ollesmere has a Parks and Recreation Department, which is responsible for the construction, management, and usage rights for all of its parks and parklands.

Ollesmere has a Guild of Roadworkers, who are responsible for maintaining the roadways and public paths within town. They also have the duty of enforcing all civil laws relating to the roadways.

Ollesmere has a public schooling program overseen by the Hall of Sages who has the responsibility of ensuring access to affordable high-quality education in all basic classes (Reading, Writing, Mathmatics, General Sciences, General Arcana, and Social Education) is made available to all citizens.

Cultural Notes

Ollesmere's chapel was built using a different architectural style from the rest of the town. The style used is known for its fluid and florid elaborate style, comprising ornate, asymmetric designs and pastel shades. It is often considered to be a playful, light style, which made exuberant use of curves and emphasized subtle asymmetry in the general shape of its structures. Walls, ceilings and moldings are decorated with numerous interlacing of curves and counter-curves based on the shapes of ‘C’ and ‘S’, along with shell forms and other naturalistic shapes.

Due to the actions of local Kami, winter is long in Ollesmere.

The Vukodlak near Ollesmere are known to be quite timid.

Ollesmere's citizens partake in a curious ritual relating to their local kami. It takes place in autumn and involves embarking on a group pilgrimage to channel Chronomancy energies of tier 2 via proclamations.

Economy

The following information was obtained via the Imperial Census Bureau as part of the Eyom Economic Outreach Program. It differs from Standard Imperial censuses in that many of Tom's citizens, regardless of culture, work in more than one occupation or hold more than a single job. Points of Interest

While private tutelage of worthy apprentices can be had even in most remote villages, Ollesmere is home to a proper school dedicated to teaching magic. Such schools are usually small, with no more than a few dozen pupils, most of whom will fail for lack of talent or discipline. The instructors are rarely first-rate, usually serving only for the pay and status, but sometimes a genius sorcerer will find a reason to observe likely apprentices here. Given the unfortunate accident potential of the school, it’s probably isolated or well-fortified.

Ollesmere makes use of canals for some of its streets. Locals often fish in the canals.
